4. Our
methodology
The courses are individual through e-mails, and not in
group. Our lessons, your questions, our answers, the final exam, etc., all are
through e-mails.
We preferred to create our own
methodolgy and not to use the existent WBT Web Based Training packages, because
of the necessary interaction between us and the students.
Like this being, all the courses
are through e-mails only, and our methodology is:
-
The lessons are sent by
e-mails every week (one or two
lessons, depending on the subject).
-
In all moment, you can send questions through e-mails that will be commented individually by our
Teachers by e-mails in a maximum of 72 hours (precisely it is that the WBT packets don't have).
-
You don't need to buy
any documents or books, all necessary documents will be send through e-mails
as annexes.
It is a simple methodology, but very
effective because of his great interaction, and this is the most important point
in any distance course.
In the
begin of our operations - 6 years ago - first we used two WBT packages, but 3 months
later we moved exactly for that methodology because the lack of the imperative
interaction and to make easy the process of our students' learning because most
doesn't have time for a study online and in real-time.
Which are the differences between an online
course and a course by correspondence?
The online course has some disadvantages, among the ones the following:
-
Forces the student to have a PC with a
minimum structure of good sound and video (camera, etc).
-
Forces the student
to be available during
specific hours and days, for the online classes.
-
The interaction
between student and teacher is low, because it's limited to the little time of
online access and normally in group.
-
To be practical,
the students needs a fast Internet connection as DSL or similar, because
with dial-up connections (let's say, with 28.8k) they are very slow in order
to follow an online class.
But
the course
by correspondence doesn't have none of those 4 limitations above, because its only demand is to have
access, usually once a week, to an e-mails system, and the interaction is total because all
your e-mails with questions - if you wanted - they are individually and
personally answered by the teacher.
The online course is "beautiful", but it's not practical and easy as the course
by correspondence. And if we think in the whole world, the online course it's almost
impossible.
5.
Can I interrupt the Course for any reason?
Yes, if you don't have any over-due debit in your account. You can continue in the
future, starting from the point
that interrupted.
6.
When will be the next class?
Your individual course begins in the week following the
Registration.
7.
There is a legal obligation to do the entire Course?
No.
8.
How is the final examination? And if
I don't pass?
The final
level will be the average measured from the final exam and must be a
minimum of 6.00. The Diploma will be supplied to the approved students.
In
each answer is possible to include a comment like that: "The earth is
round?". Answer: "No, the Doctor X showed that the earth is more
eliptical than round, but the society believe that is round". As you
see, this is better than a simple "yes". It is not a mathematical
question-answer, but what you have in mind. More or less 25% of the received
"negative" answers was changed to "positive" just because a
comment was included.
If
you don't pass, you will have an additional recovery month, without additional
cost. Not to happen again,
you will receive a Certificate of Participation.
9.
How many hours per week I will have to study?
Depending on you, we esteemed that
will be necessary from 2 to 4 hours per week.
10.
Who is our Open University?
Our Open University began his
operations in Brazil in 1997, under the name of JCMelo Open University.
During those 6 years, we have had more than 15,000 students from all
countries, in our two high level courses CIO Chief Information Officer
and IME Internet Marketing Engineering.
In June 2001 we transferred some
of our operations to the United States, beginning our international
operations with the new name Abet Open University and including the new
course "MBA program" in English, Portuguese, Spanish and
French.
But really the begin of our Open
University it is much older, because our old holding company JCMelo
Consultoria Técnica during more than 10 years - 1967 up to 1976 - trained
more than 1,500 college graduated engineers of the biggest Brazilian
companies (Furnas, Chesf, Petrobrás, Embratel, Cemig, Usiminas, and many
others) doing special courses on enterprise and process control
systems with computers, in reality the first courses on these matters
in Brazil.
Our old holding company JCMelo
Consultoria Técnica has one past of 27 years:
-
More than 1,000 Information
Systems designed by our old holding JCMelo Consultoria Técnica during
27 years,
-
More than 1,500 college
graduated engineers trained by the same holding during 10 years in
Brazil,
-
More than 15,000 IT and
sales/marketing managers students in the last 5 years, in the courses
CIO Chief Information Officer and IME Internet Marketing Engineering.
-
In 1976 started the first
computer factory in South America inside the rules of the Brazilian
National Computer Policy, manufacturing two mini and medium sizes
computers.
-
Several technical consultant contracts
for the United States Government.
-
More than 5,000 Brazilian
newspaper news shows the continuous technical success of this company.
11.
There is any
automatic up-dates system?
Yes, for your life. All new matters included in our Courses in any time are send
automatically, through e-mails, to all our current and former students.
This procedure has
great importance for the former student to stay up-to-date, because in these
fields the up-dates are very frequent.
12.
Why the name Abet?
Abet represent to encourage, incite,
aid, assist, countenance, foment, support, sustain, the
inverse of deter, disapprove, frustrate, forbid. This is the main mission of our
Open University.
